24K, 22K or 18K gold glasses frames: which is right?

Short answer: 18 carat gold is the right karat for gold eyeglass frames. 24 carat and 22 carat gold are too soft for something worn every day: the frame would bend and scratch and could not hold the lens in shape. 18 carat gold is 75% gold, alloyed with other metals for strength, and it is still real, solid gold.

Why people search for 24K and 22K frames

Buyers often assume that a higher karat is a better frame. For jewellery that only sits on the skin, a high karat can work. A spectacle frame carries lenses, bends at the hinges and sits on the nose for hours, so it needs the strength that the alloy in 18 carat gold provides.

Solid gold or gold-plated

A gold-plated frame has a thin layer of gold over another metal, and the layer can wear through. A solid gold frame is gold throughout. Ask the seller whether the frame is solid gold or plated, and ask about hallmarking.
